On Rational Bubbles and Fat Tails*

چکیده

This paper addresses the statistical properties of time series driven by rational bubbles à la Blanchard and Watson (1982). Using insights on the behavior of multiplicative stochastic processes, we demonstrate that the tails of the unconditional distribution emerging from such bubble processes follow power-laws (exhibit hyperbolic decline). More precisely, we find that rational bubbles predict a ‘fat’ power tail for both the bubble component and price differences with an exponent μ smaller than 1. The distribution of returns is dominated by the same power-law over an extended range of large returns. Although power-law tails are a pervasive feature of empirical data, these numerical predictions are in disagreement with the usual empirical estimates. It, therefore, appears that exogenous rational bubbles are hardly reconcilable with some of the stylized facts of financial data at a very elementary level.

Multi-dimensional Rational Bubbles and Fat Tails *

We extend the model of rational bubbles of [Blanchard, 1979] and [Blanchard and Watson, 1982] to arbitrary dimensions d: a number d of market time series are made linearly interdependent via d × d stochastic coupling coefficients. We first show that the no-arbitrage condition imposes that the non-diagonal impacts of any asset i on any other asset j = i has to vanish on average, i.e., must exhib...

Towards a new model of speculative bubbles: nonparametric test with an application to the Tunisian Stock Index

Bubbles in asset prices have fascinated researchers in finance. Identify asset bubbles, by circumstances, on the stock market has been a growing number of research theoretical and empirical. On a theoretical level, it was assumed that the price dynamics reflect irrational behavior of economic agents and, therefore, should be excluded from a deal with the truly rational economic agents Burmeiste...

Heterogeneous Agent Models in Economics and Finance

This chapter surveys work on dynamic heterogeneous agent models (HAMs) in economics and finance. Emphasis is given to simple models that, at least to some extent, are tractable by analytic methods in combination with computational tools. Most of these models are behavioral models with boundedly rational agents using different heuristics or rule of thumb strategies that may not be perfect, but p...

Speculative bubbles and fat tail phenomena in a heterogeneous agent model

The aim of this paper is to propose a heterogeneous agent model of stock markets that develop complicated endogenous price fluctuations. We find occurrences of non-stationary chaos, or speculative bubble, are caused by the heterogeneity of traders’ strategies. Furthermore, we show that the distributions of returns generated from the heterogeneous agent model have fat tails, a remarkable stylize...

Bubbles, crashes and intermittency in agent based market models

We define and study a rather complex market model, inspired from the Santa Fe artificial market and the Minority Game. Agents have different strategies among which they can choose, according to their relative profitability, with the possibility of not participating to the market. The price is updated according to the excess demand, and the wealth of the agents is properly accounted for. Only tw...
